Congressman Tom Marino

Representing the 12th District of Pennsylvania

Rep. Marino Statement on President’s Oval Address on Border Security

January 9, 2019
Press Release

Washington, D.C.- Rep. Tom Marino (PA-12) issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s televised Oval Office address to the nation.

Rep. Marino said the following:

“Last night, President Trump demonstrated effective leadership in addressing the nation directly regarding the need to immediately secure our southern border. Illegal drugs, crime, and gangs that continually hurt communities across the US have surged across our southern border and are exacerbating the existing crisis that has endangered Americans and those who have taken the dangerous journey.

“In FY18 alone, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol seized a total of 1.7 million pounds of narcotics and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has apprehended 6,000 gang members, including members of MS-13. It is apparent to me and most Americans that construction of a border wall to enhance the security of our nation is needed and overdue.

“The ongoing shutdown is unnecessary and could be ended immediately. Before the 115th Congress adjourned, the House passed a responsible funding bill that would garner the support of the Senate and the President would sign today. Led by Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer, Democrats who supported funding for border security, as recently as the spring of 2018, have now changed their minds putting their own political wellbeing ahead of the security of American citizens. Speaker Pelosi could reopen the government immediately if she would put forward realistic proposals that would pass the Senate and receive the President’s signature.”
